Track hoping to repeat success

When it comes to elite track and field athletes, Russellville Head Coach Deion Belue has no shortage of talent to work with.

Whether it be junior Darron Jones, who won the Class 4A/5A hurdles state championship last year, or senior Hannah Waldrep, who will run the 400 meters for the girls team, Belue said he’s excited about his roster.

A year ago, the Golden Tigers’ 4×100 relay team finished in fifth place at the Alabama High School Athletic Association championships. Belue is hopeful his team will be able to improve upon its finish this season.

“We have a chance to have another really good year with this group we’ve got,” Belue said. “Some of them are in their senior years and so this year means the most to them. I think they’re really going to ramp up and go for it.”

Connor Devaney will compete in the 100-meter and 200meter sprints, while Charlie Johnson and Sam Wilson represent the Golden Tigers in the shot put.

Dalia Vidal will throw the discus for Russellville.

In total, Belue’s roster currenly holds five studentathletes who have received a track and field scholarship offers — Gavin McDaniel, Elijah Dunstan, Daimar Valdez, Hannah Waldrep and Connor Devaney.
