Senior leadership guides THS softball
Leadership from a strong senior class is expected to shape the season for the softball team at Tharptown High School.
Head coach Jonathan Jones said the program has emphasized team chemistry as it works to build on recent progress.
The Wildcats are led by several experienced seniors, including Alyssa Fischer, who has signed to continue her career at Motlow State Community College. Fischer contributes both in the pitching circle and at third base while also serving as one of the team’s leaders.
Another senior leader is Lexi Little, a versatile player who pitches and plays first base while providing a strong presence at the plate.
Behind the plate, senior catcher Gabby Johnson has also emerged as a key contributor. Johnson has been one of the team’s top hitters and plays an important role guiding the pitching staff.
Senior outfielder Natalee Franks rounds out the senior group the team plans to rally around throughout the season.
Jones said the experience and leadership from this group has helped fill a leadership gap the program has felt in recent years.
The Wildcats are also mixing that veteran presence with younger players who are stepping into significant roles. Middle infielder Paisleigh Carr, a seventh grader, has already earned a starting spot while adjusting to the transition from youth softball to the high school level.
Eighth grader Sophie Waldrop has also joined the lineup in the outfield, giving the team additional speed and range on defense.
Several other players are expected to contribute across multiple positions. Freshman Allie Gann plays in the middle infield and can also catch while providing another strong bat in the lineup. Junior outfielder Jayden Partain brings athleticism to the outfield and has been a reliable defensive option.
Pitching duties are shared between Fischer and Cadence Kennedy, who also handles responsibilities at third base when not pitching.
Depth across the roster has also allowed younger players to gain experience. Ashlyn Abbott and Kenzie Downard provide speed off the bench and see time in the outfield, while Haven Fretwell helps on the infield.
Jones said the team is supported by courtesy runner Bella Carr and student manager Brinley Hallmark, who occasionally enters games in specialized roles. The coaching staff has incorporated team-building activities and discussions designed to help players understand the importance of supporting one another throughout the season.
Jones said the team’s ultimate goals include competing for county and area titles while continuing to build on the program’s recent postseason appearance.
“Our kids have the pieces to be pretty good,” Jones said. “It’s about coming together and putting the team first.”
