Russellville girls advance to subregion play
The Russellville Lady Golden Tigers defeated the Lawrence County Lady Red Devils 79-52 in the semifinal round of the AHSAA Class 5A Area 15 basketball tournament.
With the win, RHS advanced to the finals versus West Point. The game was played Monday night. The first- and secondplace teams in the area advance to the upcoming subregional game.
Russellville hosted the tournament semifinal and jumped out to a 21-9 firstquarter lead over their rivals from Lawrence County. The Lady Tigers were ahead 42-24 at the half, and 59-31 after three quarters.
RHS (18-11) was led in scoring by Ella Copeland with 29 points. Copeland recently chalked up her 2,000-career point scored. Angeleah Smith had 17 points and Laila Hill added 15. Blevyn Sappington scored nine while Sadie Odom and Bella Malone contributed five points each.
The season came to an end for the Russellville boys as the Golden Tigers lost to West Point 63-45 in the semifinal round of the Class 5A, Area 15 tournament held at Lawrence County High School.
Earlier in the week, the RHS teams wrapped up the regular season with home games versus Hamilton and Phil Campbell.
Russellville’s girls defeated Hamilton, 71-39, and the boys defeated the Aggies 74-65. Copeland led the RHS girls to victory with 29 points. Smith scored 20, Odom added nine, Hill had eight points, Kaylee Suggs scored six, and Sappington added two.
The Lady Tigers defeated Phil Campbell, 77-61. Copeland had 26 points and Hill had 15 for RHS. Smith scored 10, Odom had nine, Elizabeth Davis added eight, and Sappington scored five. Bella Malone and Samantha Wilson added two points each.
Leela Baker led Phil Campbell with 26 points. Addie Gilbert scored 12 and Kylee Santiago had seven. Bailey Jewell and Georgia Motes added six points each, and Emily Walker had four.
The Phil Campbell boys then defeated the Russellville Golden Tigers in overtime by a final score of 76-68.
