Fisher hits 1,000 points for career

Rivalry games are often defined by lategame heroics and career milestones, and Friday night’s showdown between the Belgreen Bulldogs and the Phil Campbell Bobcats was no exception. In a tightly contested battle that saw both teams trade momentum, the Bulldogs used a late surge to secure a 50-40 victory to open the new year.

The highlight of the night arrived in the fourth quarter when Belgreen standout Makenna Fisher drove to the basket for the bucket that secured her 1,000th career point. Fisher led all Bulldog scorers with 14 points, punctuating a night where her veteran leadership helped stabilize Belgreen during Phil Campbell’s third-quarter rally.

The Bobcats struggled to find their offensive rhythm out of the gate, managing only two points in the opening frame — a pair of free throws by Layla Baker. Belgreen took advantage of the slow start, carving out a 23-16 halftime lead, thanks to a pair of crucial three-pointers in the second quarter from Jemma Moore and Randi Terry.

Makenna Fisher scored the1,000th point of her career in the Jan. 2 game against Phil Campbell.

Phil Campbell came alive after the break, exploding for 19 points in the third quarter. Leela Baker spearheaded the comeback attempt, scoring eight of her teamhigh 16 points in the period.

However, Belgreen answered the challenge from behind the arc as Marlie Terry and Isabella Tate each drained triples in the third to keep the Bulldogs in front.

Belgreen’s defense clamped down in the final period, holding Phil Campbell to just five points. The Bulldogs’ balanced attack eventually wore down the home team with Lilliana Willingham (10 points) and Jemma Moore (8 points) providing key buckets down the stretch.

Rounding out the scoring for Belgreen were Marlie Terry with seven, Randi Terry with five, and Tate and Mackinley Hogan with three apiece.

The Bobcats were led by Leela Baker’s 16 points. Layla Baker finished with nine, while Bailey Jewell and Addie Gilbert, who hit two three-pointers in the second quarter, each added six. Georgia Motes chipped in three in the loss.
