RHS wins Homecoming game, 42-14

The Russellville Golden Tigers celebrated Homecoming with a 42-14 region win over the West Point Warriors on Friday night.

RHS improved to 5-3 on the season and the Golden Tigers are now 4-1 in Class 5A, Region 7.

Russellville scored first whenWhitGoodwinthrew a 59-yard touchdown pass to Connor Devaney. David Tomas then added the first of his six extra-point kicks of the game to make the score 7-0.

West Point evened the score late in the first quarter with a 13-yard TD pass.

RHS answered with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Goodwin to Bryson Cooper early in the second quarter to make the score 14-7.

The RHS defense led by Keifer Hallmark (10) and Malaki Groce (3) swarmed a West Point runner.

Later in the second quarter, a West Point drive ended when Russellville’s Drake Ergle intercepted a pass. The Golden Tigers capitalized on the mistake when Tarus Davis scored on a 6-yard run to make the score 21-7 with 6:45 remaining in the first half.

West Point needed only two plays to score to open the third period. A 61-yard touchdown run by the Warriors made the score 21-14.

Russellville answered with a touchdown on the following possession that ended with an 11-yard pass from Goodwin to Daniel Aycock.

West Point’s next drive was stopped by an interception by Russellville’s Jasen Noel. The Golden Tigers needed only three plays after the turnover to make the score 35-14 when Goodwin ran six yards for a TD.

Russellville’s final touchdown of the night came on a 50-yard pass from Goodwin to Davis with 2:27 remaining in the third quarter.

Malaki Groce of RHS would later intercept a West Point pass to stop a fourth-quarter scoring threat by the Warriors. Russellville was able to successfully run out the clock and end the game with the help of two fumble recoveries on offense by Cade Willis.

“I’m proud of our kids and I thought we were focused all week,” head coach Dustin Goodwin said. “They did a really good job of handling all the distractions that could have potentially arisen with Homecoming. We had a good week. It was a really busy week and a really busy day, but I thought they handled it well and performed well.”

Next up for RHS will be a home region game versus Priceville with the winner clinching second place in Class 5A, Region 7.
