Phil Campbell earns Super Regional spot

The Phil Campbell volleyball team earned a spot in the Class 3A Super Regional for the third straight year.

The Bobcats rebounded from a tough regular season to find new life in the area tournament.

After a late season coaching change, the Bobcats cancelled a final match at Lynn to focus on conditioning and fundamentals in preparation for the area tournament and a shot at going back to Birmingham.

It paid off. After shaking the rust off and losing a first set to Sheffield, 25-8, the Bobcats dominated the Bulldogs winning three straight sets 25-18, 25-13, and 25-22.

The win put Phil Campbell in the finals of the Class 3A, Area 15 tournament against Colbert Heights.

After battling out two close sets with the Wildcats losing 18-25 and 21-25, the Bobcats finally succumbed to playing six straight sets and lost the third 14-25 to finish runner- up.

In only the fifth year of the program, Phil Campbell has earned three Super Regional bids getting quality experience.

The Bobcats will play the Donoho School Wednesday at 9 a.m. Donoho, a private school, has won 12 volleyball state titles.
