Super Citizen program honors students, heroes
RUSSELLVILLE Second and third graders from West Elementary and Russellville Elementary recently celebrated finishing their 10-week Liberty Learning Foundation Super Citizen program.
“We are thankful for everyone who helps make this program possible for our students,” said elementary school Principal Tiffany Warhurst. “It’s a great program that teaches our students the importance of being a good citizen, while also instilling our core values.”
The students gathered not only to celebrate what they had learned, but also to honor chosen local heroes on the stage.
“Through the recognition ceremony, our second- grade students chose members of the community to be honored,” said West Elementary Principal Alicia Stanford. “Each recipient chosen from our school received a Statue of Liberty pin. Together, by partnering with the Liberty Foundation, we aim to foster a school environment where every student feels empowered to be a role model and a great citizen.”
Tawanna Vickers, program director for the Liberty Learning Foundation, said her biggest takeaway from the day was that the students had exceed expectations, both “academically and emotionally.”
Vickers said while the students learned crucial civics, financial, character, career and literacy lessons in the classroom as part of the program, they also showed how they were already transforming the community by choosing and celebrating local heroes.
Superintendent Dr. Tim Guinn spoke highly of the.
“Liberty Learning has been an outstanding partner in bringing not only character education to our youth at both the elementary and middle school grade levels, but also citizenship and patriotism, which is something our country needs more of,” Guinn said.
Curriculum Director Natalie Bendall praised the second- and thirdgrade students for “embracing the lessons of liberty and leadership through the Super Citizen program.”
“Their celebration not only showcased their growth as young citizens but also honored the everyday heroes who inspire and strengthen our community,” Bendall said.
