Red Bay playoff hopes halted by Mars Hill

The Red Bay Tigers’ impressive baseball season came to a heartbreaking conclusion over the weekend as they were edged out by the Mars Hill Panthers in a tightly contested Class 2A state playoff series.

In a testament to the evenly matched talent and determination, all three games were decided by a single run, keeping fans on the edge of their seats until the final out.

The series kicked off with a classic pitching duel in game one, ultimately won by Mars Hill 2-1. Red Bay pitcher Ty Reynolds delivered a strong performance, surrendering just two runs on three hits while striking out five batters over his time on the mound.

The Tigers struck first in the top of the second inning when Harley Strickland tripled and was promptly driven home by a Carson McGee single. However, Mars Hill rallied in the bottom of the fifth, pushing across two crucial runs to secure the victory.

Strickland led the Tigers offense with two hits and the lone run scored, while Dallas Terrell also contributed a triple.

Facing elimination, Red Bay battling back for a dramatic 6-5 victory in extra innings that stretched late into the night.

Both squads came out swinging, plating three runs apiece in the first inning. Mars Hill took a brief 4-3 lead in the second, but the Tigers clawed back, tying the game in the fourth and taking a 5-4 lead in the fifth. The Panthers knotted the score at 5-5 in the top of the seventh, sending the game into extra frames.

In the bottom of the ninth, Red Bay loaded the bases, and Jeremiah Robinson was hit by a pitch, forcing in Strickland for the walkoff win and evening the series.

Reynolds paced the offense with three hits, Strickland added two, and Ayden Pruitt earned the win with a clutch relief appearance, pitching the final inning and a third.

The decisive game three was another nailbiter with Mars Hill ultimately claiming a 4-3 walk-off victory to clinch the series.

Red Bay jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Panthers methodically chipped away, scoring single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take a 3-2 lead. The Tigers refused to quit, tying the game 3-3 in the top of the sixth. However, Mars Hill manufactured the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to end Red Bay’s season.

Despite the loss, the Tigers outhit the Panthers 9-6 in the final game. Reed Hamilton had a standout performance at the plate, collecting three hits, driving in a run, and scoring once. Terrell and Strickland each added two hits for Red Bay.

Red Bay concluded its season with an outstanding 25-9 record.
