Spring makes its way back to Franklin County

She Says

It hasn’t been long since we had a bit of snow in Franklin County, and it also hasn’t been long since we had an EF-2 tornado – the latter certainly more impactful than the former. As I was writing this, despite being the last day of February, for me, it felt like a nice Spring day.

I was mostly busy indoors, but I managed to enjoy the outdoors for a few minutes here and there as I went about my day. The temperature was perfect for me – not too hot, not too cold. Just right. A light breeze at times. While we’re still waiting on the most colorful residents of the season to awaken, Spring is certainly in the air … or at least making its way to the door.

For now. This is, after all, Alabama, and the weather can and will change often. But at least for the moment, it’s a calm, pleasant interlude, at least in my book, as we work our way past winter and into the seasons to come.

I noticed a shadow of some trees in my yard while I was out. I always enjoy seeing interesting shadows along the way, and a tree shadow at the right time of day can be particularly striking. There’s something about the bold shapes and lines as they twist and reach in the afternoon sun. The “little things” can make our days more pleasant if only we take the time to notice and appreciate them, and shadows are certainly one of my favorites.

Will winter sneak back in before Spring fully arrives? Who can say? I remember a couple of years when we had snow in April in Franklin County, though I suspect such occurrences are now long since firmly mere fixtures of the distant past. It was pretty unusual even at the time.

Though I’m not a fan of the intense heat (and humidity!) that will certainly be prevalent once summer arrives, I look forward to the pleasant moments of Spring before that intensity sets in. Although, even in summer, there can be pleasant nights with warm breezes and lower temperatures to moderate the intenseness so common in a Southern summer.
