Madison Academy sweeps RHS

The Russellville Golden Tigers hosted the Madison Academy Mustangs for a varsity baseball doubleheader in what was a battle between tradition-rich programs.

Madison Academy and RHS have faced off in the 5A playoff semifinals a couple of times in the past with the Golden Tigers advancing both times.

In this regular season matchup, Madison Academy came out on top with a sweep. The Mustangs won game one 4-0, and then took game two, 9-0.

Outstanding pitching by both teams in game one kept mostof thebatsascoldasthe fans in the stands at RHS on Saturday. Madison Academy scored all four of its runs in the third inning. The big hit for the Mustangs came in the form of Myles Johnson’s three-run home run.

Russellville starting pitcher Brayden Entrekin went six innings allowing no earned runs and only two hits before Coltan Oliver pitched a scoreless final frame. Entrekin struck out five and walked two batters. RHS had one error on defense.

The Golden Tigers managed one hit, by Ty Willis off Jack Doyle. The Madison Academy pitcher went seven innings and struck out seven.

Game two was a tough one for RHS. The Mustangs scored four runs in the top half of the third inning and added five more in the fourth. Madison Academy outhit Russellville 6-4 and the Mustangs played errorless defensewhiletheGolden Tigers had three defensive miscues.

Brennon Thorpe had two hits to lead Russellville. Tripp Cleveland and Caleb Hawkins also hit safely for RHS. All Russellville hits during the doubleheader were singles.

RHS (3-3) used four pitchers in game two. Gunner Sappington got the start and went 2.1 innings. The righthander allowed four runs. Oliver worked one inning and allowed five runs. Willis pitched a scoreless frame, and Brayden Hatton threw 2.2 innings allowing no runs.
