Golden Tigers defeat West Point in basketball area opener

The Russellville Golden Tigers opened varsity basketball area play with a 76-65 home win over the West Point Warriors.

RHS got 44 points from EJ King as the senior led the team to victory. The Golden Tigers led 40-33 at the half and outscored the Warriors 20-18 in a fierce battle during the game’s final quarter.

Russellville’s Jah Williams followed King in scoring with 13 points. Cam Phinizee added eight and Parker Odom scored five for RHS. Sir Williams had four points while Daniel Aycock and Malaki Groce rounded out the scoring for Russellville with one point each.

The win for RHS came just a few days after the Golden Tigers fell to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa by a final score of 64-54.

The 7A Patriots were outscored by Russellville 17-9 in the second quarter and trailed the Golden Tigers 29-28 at the half. Hillcrest then used a strong fourth quarter outpacing RHS 21-9 in the final period to get the win.

EJ King led Russellville with 31 points. Daniel Aycock added 9 and Jah Williams scored eight points. Cam Phinizee had three, Sir Williams scored two and Malaki Groce added one point for RHS.

The Russellville varsity girls hosted West Point Jan. 7 and fell to the Lady Warriors by a final score of, 65-29.

Russellville (5-9, 0-1) trailed 27-14 at the half and 53-26 after three quarters of the contest. West Point went on to outscore the Lady Golden Tigers 12-3 in the final period of the area opener.

RHS was led in scoring by Ella Copeland’s 13 points. Angeleah Smith added eight points for Russellville while Sadie Odom, Laila Hill, Samantha Wilson and Bella Malone all had two points each.
