DKG learns about safety, self-defense for women

She Says

Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha Upsilon’s November program focused on safety and self-defense for women. Stephanie Mayfield, now retired from education, taught for 34 years. She currently works as an officer of Franklin County Community Correction. Her presentation was informative and very timely.

Personal safety has become an issue of importance for everyone, especially for women. The following are some suggestions she offered.

Mayfield stated women should avoid shopping alone. Try to shop with a friend or a relative. Carry your purse close to your body and keep an eye on the people in front of you as well as behind you.

Put your phone down! A distracted person is an easy target because they are focused on conversation and not observing their surroundings. Your eyes should be watching where you are going.

Your hands should be free so you can defend yourself. Stephanie demonstrated some self-defense methods, and she also stressed that before you leave the inside of the mall, locate your car keys and have them ready in your hand as you walk to your car. This way you’re prepared to get in your car and lock it immediately after you sit down.

Don’t be afraid to be vocal. Avoid suspicious people, and trust your gut. If you feel like an area or situation may be dangerous, or if someone is following you and making unwanted verbal contact, scream or make a scene that will cause them to leave.

Consider taking a self-defense class geared toward women.

The meeting took place at the Russellville Methodist Church. President Beverly Donaldson presided, and Donna Bolton presented the inspiration. Members were informed that the Alpha Upsilon yearbook will be distributed at the December meeting. Gayle McAlister reported arrangements for the Christmas dinner scheduled for Dec. 2 at the Russellville Methodist Church.

Hostesses for the November meeting were Kristy Smith, Angie Garrison, Savannah Smith and Courtney Jones.

At the close of the meeting, DKG Alpha Upsilon officers conducted the initiation of new member Katlin Frederick.
