Turner Magic performs at Historic Roxy Theatre this Sunday

On October 6, Joe M. Turner, magician, mentalist and motivational speaker, will be making his debut at the Historic Roxy Theatre for a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee. This show will feature his favorite magical experiences and some of our local residents, including Chase Sparks, who will participate in his acts.

While it’s designed for teens, adults and seniors, it will be appropriate for families to attend together. Tickets are $20 and children under six get in for $15.

Born in Jackson, Miss., he grew up in nearby Brandon, Miss. His early years were marked with interest in magic, music and acting. He was fascinated with the televised magic performances of Doug Henning and David Copperfield. He cites Johnny Carson, Dick Van Dyke, Red Skelton and Victor Borge as additional influences on his style.

Turner is a Mississippi State graduate and earned a 1989 summer undergraduate fellowship to study nuclear physics at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He spent evenings in Oak Ridge as the pianist/music director at the local theater.

During the summers of 1991 and 1992 he was awarded music direction and performance internships at Maine State Music Theatre. He later wrote and composed the stage musical called “Bank Notes.”

He had leading and supporting roles in numerous productions and was awarded Outstanding Performance by an Actor in 1991 and Outstanding Director in 1992. In 1991, he was named to the Mississippi State University Hall of Fame in recognition of his various academic, artistic and leadership achievements.

Turner is recognized within the magic industry as a columnist for Genii magazine and is based in both Memphis, Tenn., and Atlanta, Georgia. Because of his work as a magic consultant, writer and director for theatre, film and causerelated promotional projects on the national scale, he is sometimes called “America’s Corporate Conjuror.” He has entertained prominent elected officials, sports figures, corporate leaders andothercelebrities.

He has been featured in numerous television, radio and print appearances, including “Good Morning America” and “Nightline.” He was a professional corporate magician for the Coca-Cola Company and many more.

Turner served as the 2015-2016 International President of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, the largest magic industry association with approximately 10,000 members in 88 countries, and he is a Life Member.

He is also a member of the National Speakers Association, the Academy of Magical Arts at The Magic Castle in Hollywood, the Society of American Magicians (Life Member), The Magic Circle in London and the Fellowship of Christian Magicians.

He is also a popular speaker, onscreen and onstage talent, a professional pianist, an accomplished vocalist, composer and playwright. He and his wife have two adult children, a daughter and a son.
