GFWC members take part in GFWC service project as part of workshop

The 2024 GFWC Alabama Leadership Workshop took place at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Hoover, Ala. Becky Vansant, president of GFWC Alabama, gave the welcome to 104 clubwomen in attendance from all over Alabama.

Vansant’s them for the 2024-2026 GFWC Alabama Administration is “Living the Volunteer Spirit – Compassion in Action.” The GFWC official mission states that we are dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service.

Vansant has chosen Mental Health Matters as her GFWC Alabama President’s Project. Christi Robinson will serve as chairman for this two-year special project.

The Alabama Department of Mental Health mission is to “serve, empower, support and promotethe health and well-being of Alabamians. The ADMH serves more than 200,000 Alabama citizens with mental illnesses, developmental disabilities and substance use disorders.

President Vansant and Christi Robison both serve on the board of directors of WellStone, North Alabama’s largest and most comprehensive behavioral healthcare provider. GFWC Alabama will be working with the Alabama Department of Mental Health and WellStone during this administration to support Alabama citizens with mental health issues.

The workshop featured Community Service Program chairmen’s display boards promoting CSP projects including Education and Libraries; Civic Engagement and Outreach; Arts and Culture; Environment; Health and Wellness; Scholarships; and Legislation/Public Policy. The chairmenwere available at designated places to discuss their CSP project and to distribute information about the projects, along with favors including pencils, pens, notepads, gift cards and more.

Special sessions included information providing tips for taking minutes, reporting, treasurer responsibilities, resolutions, by-laws, signature program focusing on domestic and sexual violence awarness and prevention, parliamentary procedures, membership, protocol, and the Community Impact Program. The GFWC Jennie Award and the Women’s History and Resource Center awards were presented.

The GFWC Alabama Juniorette Alumni Group was formed at the workshop. This club is for any former member of a Juniorette Club a past or current Juniorette advisor or a past or current State Federation Juniorette Chair. Currently, this club communicates/meets through a closed Facebook Group. As a service project for the workshop, clubwomen donated school supplies and assembled back-to-school bags for children.
