Cultura Garden Club meets on the lake

The members of Cultura Garden Club enjoyed their last meeting of the year at the beautiful lake home of Debra and Mickey Spillers.

This meeting was a potluck dinner. The menu included chicken fingers, baked beans, salads, casseroles and desserts.

Instead of a planned program, members shared memories of their family and friends gathering on Cedar Creek Lake. Recollections included fun times of enjoying boating, fishing, swimming, bird watching, cooking, partying and taking in the holiday fireworks on the lake.

Debbie Nale, president, presided over the meeting. The minutes and treasurer’s report were approved. The club’s annual spring flower sale was reported to be a success. The proceeds from this fundraiser will be used for decorating downtown Russellville for the spring and summer. The club’s annual dues for the 2024-2025 year were collected.

Plans for the downtown pot planting and basket hanging were discussed. To assist the city in keeping our pots and hanging baskets looking good, it is sometimes necessary for members to water on long holiday weekends or hot, dry spells. Members also water and care for the large “Christmas” tree at the Byars-Batchelor office complex which requires at least 10 gallons of water weekly. Members signed the summer watering schedule indicating the month and the corner of plants they would water.

The Garden Club of Alabama Lifetime members were approved. Honorees included Debbie Nale, Susie Malone, Brenda Oliver, Martha Sibley and Barbara Sage. Doris Woodruff received this honor last year. Cultura has donated approximately $300 to the Garden Club of Alabama Lifetime Members Horticulture Scholarship. The recipients of this state scholarship will pursue a career in horticulture.

Debbie Beason, chairman, conducted the installation of the 2024-2026 club officers. Each officer received a different style of flower vase for their particular office. Serving as officers for the next two years are Cheri McCain, president; Debra Spillers, vice president; Susie Hovater Malone, secretary; Patricia Cox, treasurer; Debbie Beason, historian; Brenda Oliver, parliamentarian.

Cheri McCain presented Debbie Nale, out-going president, with a beautiful vase and flowers for her outstanding two years as the garden club president.

Club observations for May included the National Day of Prayer, Kentucky Derby, Mothers’ Day, Memorial Day and National Garden Week.

The meeting closed with the reading of The Garden Club of Alabama Collect.
