Track, field season gets underway for Russellville athletes

The Russellville track and field team is working hard to have a successful season this year.

Head coach Chris Boatwright is leading the team into competition, and he has a large roster of athletes representing Russellville High School in a positive way.

“Our team has grown quite a bit this year,” Boatwright said. “We have over 50 athletes on the team, and we have done well in our first two meets this season. Placing top-five team finishes in our first two meets has been a huge success for us.”

Standouts for the RHS varsity so far this season include multi-event athlete Cash Crumpton, thrower Matthew James, EJ King in high jump, sprinter Ari Willingham and seventh graders Ryland Calvert, a sprinter, and Cesar Felipe, a long-distance runner.

“Our team goals are to win our meets as a team and have many athletes PR for their spot at sectionals in April,” Boatwright explained. “Our team said that they would like to have 25 athletes go to state this season, and I am trying to make that happen.”

The Russellville boys and girls compete in Class 5A Section 4 with Arab, Ardmore, Boaz, Brewer, Douglas, East Limestone, Fairview, Guntersville, Lawrence County, Randolph, Sardis, Scottsboro and West Point.

The Golden Tigers have home meets scheduled for April 1 and April 15, and the Last Chance Invitational will be April 19 at Scottsboro. The state meet is scheduled for May 2-4 in Gulf Shores.
