BHS teams hold off Vina

The Belgreen Bulldog boys had to hold off a second-half surge to beat the Vina Red Devils 39-38 last week, while the girls’ game was a much more lopsided affair in Belgreen’s favor. The boys took losses to Phil Campbell and Tremont, while the girls triumphed over both for a winning week.

BOYS

Belgreen 39, Vina 28

Belgreen led Vina 7-4 at the end of the first quarter and extended that lead to 15-8 at halftime. Vina stormed back in the third quarter, however, outscoring Belgreen 16-9 to tie the game 24-24.

A big fourth quarter by Austin James helped lift the Bulldogs to the win over their county rival.

James scored 15 points, 10 of those coming in the critical fourth quarter. Jonathan Mendoza added 13 points. Braycen Johnson finished with five points, Will King four points and Alex Guidry two points.

Conner Davidson led Vina with 19 points. Davidson was followed by Hunter Griffith with seven points and Nate Stidham with six points. Christian Purser and Grayson Ridge added two points each.

Tremont 41, Belgreen 40

Belgreen fell to Tremont, Miss., 41-40.

Belgreen trailed 22-12 at halftime. The Bulldogs capitalized on a big third quarter, outscoring Tremont 19-4 to take a 31-26 lead, but they couldn’t hold off Tremont’s fourth-quarter surge. Tremont outscored Belgren 15-9 to get the one-point win.

James and King led Belgreen with 14 points and 13 points, respectively. Johnson added seven points. Mendoza added four points, and Hunter Woodruff got two points.

Phil Campbell 44, Belgreen 23

A big second quarter lifted the Phil Campbell Bobcats to an easy win over the Belgreen Bulldogs 44-23.

Bryant Hyde led the Bobcats with 12 points. King led Belgreen with 10 points.

GIRLS

Belgreen 42, Phil Campbell 36

The Belgreen Lady Bulldogs raced out to a big lead and held off the Phil Campbell Lady Bobcats to win 42-36 this past week.

Belgreen scraped together an 8-6 lead in the first quarter before extending that lead to 22-15 at halftime.

Phil Campbell started a comeback in the second half, outscoring Belgreen 13-10 in the third quarter. Madison Branch had a big third quarter for the Bobcats, scoring seven of her 13 points.

Noelle Willigham led the charge for Belgreen in the fourth quarter, making six of nine free throws. She led the Bulldogs with 14 points.

Willingham was followed by Makenna Fisher with 10 points. Bryn Scott added nine points, Dacota Green seven points and Makayla Willingham two points.

Macy Hardy led Phil Campbell with 15 points. Branch followed Hardy with 13. Layla Baker finished with four, Allie Herring two and Kaylie Motes two.

Belgreen 66, Vina 36

Belgreen had no problem beating the Vina Red Devils, running away with the game 66-36. Belgreen led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter and had the game put away at halftime, leading 48-17.

Lily Green and Noelle Willingham led Belgreen with 12 points and 11 points respectively. Dacota Green added nine points. Scott and Fisher added eight points. Sydnee West and Makayla Willingham had six points. Lilliana Willingham had three points, Alayana Tate two points and Isabella Tate one point.

Kaitlyn Athey and Sara Harper scored 11 points each to lead Vina. Mikala Mitchell added six points, Kaley Attaway three points, Kari Harper two points, Mackenzie Elrod two points and Harleigh Ridge one point.

Belgreen 58, Tremont 23

Belgreen beat Tremont, Miss., 58-23 this past week. The Bulldogs led 16-7 at the end of the first quarter and 39-12 at halftime.

Isabella Tate led Belgreen with 11 points. Lilliana Willingham and Dacota Green scored seven points each, followed by Alayana Tate with four points. Lily Green, Noelle Willingham and Carson Hovater scored four points each. Fisher added three points, and Makayla Willingham chipped in two points.
