RHS boys rise to top of area, girls defeat Brewer Patriots

The Russellville varsity boys and girls basketball teams recently faced area opponents Brewer and Lawrence County, with the boys picking up a couple of wins and the girls going 1-1. Russellville’s boys improved to 4-0 in the area, and the girls are now 1-3 – with contests versus West Point and Lawrence County remaining on the schedule, along with other regular season games.

BOYS

Russellville 67, Brewer 57

Russellville completed a regular season sweep of the Patriots with a home victory Jan. 10.

RHS jumped out to an 18-9 first quarter lead and held a 34-20 advantage at the half. The two teams scored 15 points each in the game’s third quarter, and the Golden Tigers held off the Brewer squad in the final period for the win.

Nine Golden Tigers registered in the scoring column, with EJ King leading the way with 21 points, including 14 in the first half. Gavin Hyde also reached double figures with 15.

Amir Williams followed with seven, Bralynn Vincent scored six, Mike Young and KJ Murray had five apiece, Jah Williams and Conner Warhurst had three each, and Tilmon Baker scored two.

Russellville 87, Lawrence County 52

Russellville dominated the Red Devils in Moulton Jan. 13. The Golden Tigers improved to 11-8 on the season with the victory.

RHS got scoring from 11 different Golden Tigers before the final horn sounded; King led the team with 23 points. Amir Williams had 13, while Vincent and Malachi Duncan also scored in double figures with 10.

Hyde scored eight, Murray and Baker added six apiece, Jah Williams had four, and Young scored three. Rounding out the scoring were Malachi Gholston and Randell Johnson with two each.

GIRLS

Russellville 55, Brewer 31

The Lady Golden Tigers used a 9-0 start to build a 27-6 first quarter lead over Brewer. RHS grew the advantage to 39-13 at the half, and the Tigers were up 46-22 after three periods of play.

Ella Copeland led Russellville with 13 points. Jacey Moore had 11, and Avery Watts also scored in double figures with 10.

Jenna Whitfield and Laila Hill added eight apiece, while Anna Beth Oliver and Kylee Phifer scored two points each. Kaylee Garner chipped in one.

Lawrence County 63, Russellville 56 (OT)

The Lady Devils rallied from a 14-point deficit at the end of the third quarter to get an area win over RHS in overtime at LCHS.

Lawrence County evened the score at 47-47 with 1:15 remaining in the fourth quarter and had a 51-48 advantage with 11.9 seconds on the fourth period clock. Anna Beth Oliver hit a clutch three-pointer for RHS after a timeout to send the game into overtime.

LCHS was able to grab the momentum back in the four-minute extra period, outscoring the Lady Golden Tigers 12-5 down the stretch.

Russellville (8-11) was led in scoring by Copeland’s 14 points. Hill added 13, Oliver finished with 12, Moore had 11, and Whitfield scored six.
