Belgreen teams grab pair of wins

The Belgreen Bulldogs picked up a pair of wins this past week while tuning up for the Franklin County Tournament.

The varsity girls remained undefeated in area play with a 64-38 win over Hackleburg. The varsity boys lost to the Panthers in double overtime but beat Class 3A Colbert Heights 69-58.

GIRLS

In the varsity girls’ area win over Hackleburg, Dacota Green scored 22 points to lead the Bulldogs over the Panthers, going nine-for-10 from the freethrow line.

Belgreen started the game hot, outscoring Hackleburg 21-11 in the first quarter. Green scored nine of those points for the Bulldogs. Noelle Willingham scored seven firstquarter points for Belgreen.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 33-19 at halftime and 48-33 by the end of the third quarter.

Willingham ended the game with 14 points. She was followed by Bryn Scott with eight points, Isabella Tate with five points, Lillanna Willingham with four points and Lily Green with three points.

Jacqueline Alban, Makayla Willingham, Makenna Fisher and Carson Hovater all added two points each.

BOYS

In varsity boys games, Austin James, Braycen Johnson and Jonathan Mendoza combined for 53 of Belgreen’s 58 points in the double overtime loss to Hackleburg.

Hackleburg led the game 22-19 at halftime, but Belgreen stormed back in the third quarter to take a 36-33 lead. Hackleburg came back to send the game into overtime.

After a stalemate in the first overtime, the Panthers got the edge in the end, winning 62-59.

James led with 23 points. Johnson added 17 points, and Mendoza added 13 points. Ely Mitchell finished with three points, Hunter Woodruff with two points and Will King with a point.

In the Colbert Heights game, Belgreen had a big second half to come from behind and beat the Wildcats 69-58.

Johnson led Belgreen with 25 points, followed by James with 16 points. Those two players combined for 17 of Belgreen’s 20 fourthquarter points.

Mendoza added nine points, Mitchell eight points, Alex Guidry four points and Woodruff four points.
