NW-SCC show choir performs World Tour Concert
Take a trip back to the ’70s with the Northwest-Shoals Community College show choir, Vocal Point, when the group performs its ’70s World Tour Concert next weekend.
The concert will be staged in the Lou B. Bevill Center on the NW-SCC Phil Campbell campus April 29-30 at 7 p.m. each night. Directed by Jonathon Romero, the show will feature popular music from the ’70s and include singing, dancing and a live band.
Romero, now in his third year at NW-SCC, previously worked with the Meridian Community College show choir for four years.
“This is an incredibly hardworking group of students, and the concerts will feature lots of high energy as they perform a number of ’70s classics,” Romero said. “My favorite is probably ‘Stairway to Heaven’ or ‘Hotel California’ because I’m playing lead guitar.”
Members of the show choir include Dylan Adkins, from Belgreen; Amberly Brown and Avery Guinn, from Russellville; Chloe Carpenter, Makenzie Galloway and Ari Gilstrap, from Phil Campbell; and Briley Mills, from Red Bay; as well as Gabe Engle of Haleyville, Andrew Estes of Double Springs, Taegan Franks of Winfield, John Linley and Anna Kate Warner of Hamilton and Nicol Webster of Florence.
Webster, soprano, said she’s especially looking forward to the ABBA Medley.
“It’s dedicated to my grandmother. This music is ‘our thing,’” Webster said. “I moved to Alabama six months ago on a scholarship. I did show choir in high school, and it was much bigger; I’m really enjoying getting to be part of a smaller group here. It’s easier to connect with people. We’re like a little family, and it’s wonderful.”
Guinn, a bass, said he’s eagerly awaiting the performances.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun. There’s a part where I get to slide to the front wearing hippie clothes,” said Guinn, who many from the area might know as “Fred the Elf” from “The Roxy’s Christmas Spectacular.” “We’ll be performing everyone’s favorite music from that time. Among my favorites that we’ll be doing include ‘Hotel California’ by the Eagles and ‘Country Roads’ by John Denver.”
Admission will be $8, with children 12 and younger entering free. NW-SCC employees and students will be admitted free, but online registration is required.
