BCBS, FC Extension provide $10K for Vina playground

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, along with the Franklin County Extension as its community partner, held a presentation to award a $10,000 check through the Be Healthy School Grant Program to Vina School for new playground equipment.

The presentation ceremony took place in the gym Oct. 20.  After the check presentation, the Blue Cross team filmed a commercial about the grant.

“We continue to see the positive impact of the Be Healthy School Grant Program in schools across our state,” said Sophie Martin, director of corporate communications and community relations for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama.  “The ongoing success of our school grant program validates the investment we are making in the long-term health of Alabama’s children.”

FCS federal programs director Lori Hardin called time on the playground an “integral part of a student’s overall success.” “We are so thankful that Vina was chosen for this,” Hardin added.

Vina Mayor Michael Moomaw said the town is grateful for those who helped make the grant possible. “We’re excited there will be new playground equipment, and we look forward to seeing our students benefit from this for years to come.”

“It’s wonderful that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama is investing in the health of our children, not only in Franklin County but across the great state of Alabama,” said Katernia Cole Coffey, Franklin County Extension director. “The new equipment will help increase physical activity while Extension agents work to improve the areas of SNAP-Ed, EFNEP and 4-H to help create learning opportunities for Vina School in the areas of nutrition and general healthy habits.”
