Phil Campbell boys, girls gets wins over cross-county rival Tharptown

Caitlynn Mills had a strong first quarter to help the Phil Campbell Bobcats get off to a good start and beat the Tharptown Wildcats 57-31.

Phil Campbell jumped out to a 19-8 first quarter lead on the hot shooting of Mills. The Bobcat girls extended their lead to 33-14 at halftime and were firmly in control at the end of the third quarter, leading 46-26.

Following Mills, Katie Thomas and Trinity Thomas scored 10 points each. Faith Cook added nine points, Kenner Scott five points, Olivia Taylor four points, Madison Branch four points, Allie Herring two points and Jade Roberson two points.

Gracie Montgomery scored 21 of Tharptown’s 31 points, with 16 of those points coming in the second half.

In the varsity boys game, Phil Campbell used a strong third quarter to put some distance between them and the Tharptown Wildcats, coming away with a 72-66 win.

Tharptown led Phil Campbell 17-13 at the end of the first quarter, but the Bobcats came back to tie the game 32-32 at halftime. Phil Campbell outscored Tharptown 20-11 in the third quarter to take a 52-43 lead and held off a Tharptown rally in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Bryant Hyde led five Bobcats in double-figures with 21 points. Luke Garrison followed Hyde with 13 points, and Mason Swinney had 12 points. Kyle Pace and Canaan Clay added 11 points each. Jonah Fisher had two points.

Winston Nolen led Tharptown with 31 points; 15 of those points came in the fourth quarter run by the Wildcats.  Colton Simmons added 12 points for Tharptown.

Edwin Vela added eight points, Luis Valdez six points, Dylan Valdez six points and Blake Daily two points.

In other varsity girls action, Katie Thomas and Caitlynn Mills had a dominant first half as the Phil Campbell Bobcats easily beat the Vinemont Eagles 70-35.

Thomas scored 21 of her game-high 25 points in the first half. Mills scored all 19 of her points in the first half.

The Bobcats put the game away early, taking a 31-10 first quarter lead and extending that lead to 48-18 at halftime.
