Red Bay City Council acknowledges FFA String Band accomplishment

The Red Bay City Council held a special presentation and reception for the 2019 FFA String Band July 20 at 6:30 p.m. The event took place at City Hall prior to the start of the council meeting.

The band competed in a national competition on television Oct. 31, 2019, in Lucas Oil Stadium, located in Indianapolis, Minn. While the group did not make it into the top three, they succeeded in placing among the top four.

This represents a significant improvement from the 2018 performance, where Red Bay’s FFA String Band barely missed breaking into the top 15, coming in 16th.

FFA adviser for the group is City Councilman Jarod Massey, and he presented championship rings to the five string band members who were present: Jaycee Vinson, Mynah Jackson, Bailey Bolton, Jon Shotts and Codey Cleveland. The sixth member, Codey Wilemon, was unable to attend and will receive his ring later.

“It means so much to receive these state championship rings,” said Bolton. “We worked really hard to improve our standing from the previous year, and we are proud of what we accomplished.”

Bolton, who has since graduated, said she learned a great many life lessons and made “the best of friends” during her time in the Red Bay FFA String Band. Of the band’s adviser, Massey, Bolton said she learned many skills she will take with her as she begins college next month.

“With this group, I knew it was going to be their year to truly excel,” Massey said. “They all really stepped up while performing in the state competition. I am extremely proud of what they have achieved.”

Red Bay Mayor Charlene Fancher added her own praise. “Red Bay is very proud of the FFA String Band state champions,” she said. “On behalf of the City of Red Bay, I extend my congratulations to you all.”
