Season ends for RHS soccer

The Russellville High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams went on the road for first round of the AHSAA Class 4A-5A play-off matches, and both squads struggled in losses.

April 26 the RHS boys traveled to Guntersville, and head coach Trey Stanford’s team fell to the Wildcats by a 2-0 final score. Guntersville advanced to round two, and they will travel to play a West Morgan team that beat Arab 1-0.

The Russellville boys finished the season with an 8-5-1 record, including a 6-2 mark in Area 14, where West Morgan took first place. The Golden Tigers had one win this season over Madison Academy and Lawrence County and two each over area opponents Haleyville, Hamilton and Danville. RHS tied St. John Paul II Catholic and lost to West Morgan and Florence twice, to go along with the loss to Guntersville.

Also April 26, Coach Fred Ambrosio’s Lady Golden Tigers went to Arab and dropped their match by a 5-0 score. Arab will host Guntersville in round two after GHS took down West Morgan in the opening round 5-1.

The RHS girls finished the regular season in second place in Class 4A-5A, Area 14 to West Morgan. The girls had a 7-5-1 record in 2019 and went 6-2 in area play. Wins this season came over Haleyville (2), Hamilton (2), Danville (2) and Lawrence County. RHS tied Hartselle in one match and lost to HHS in another and also fell in matches to West Morgan twice, Madison Academy and Arab.

This season marked the first year for a junior varsity program for both the boys and girls at RHS. Both teams were stocked with talented players that will make their way onto the varsity in the future. T

he AHSAA North-South All-Star teams were announced recently, and RHS will be represented by two players in Montgomery this July: Defender Andres Campos made the boys’ team, and goalkeeper Briana Ramirez will play in the girls’ game.
