RHS girls pick up two wins

Russellville 5, Austin 1

The Lady Golden Tigers hosted Austin March 7 and used a four-run sixth inning to get the victory.

Megan Warhurst got the start in the pitching circle, and she allowed three hits and one run for the complete-game win. Warhurst worked out of some first-inning trouble and went on to throw 104 pitches over seven innings. She struck out eight and walked three.

“She pitched a great game,” said Russellville head coach Kathryn Montgomery. “We’ve been battling a little bit with throwing strikes, but she was able to come out tonight with the right mindset and pound the zone the way we needed her to, and once she got ahead, she was able to throw her movement or off-speed pitches, and it really helped us all.”

Russellville scored a run in the bottom of the third to tie the score when Jenna Whitfield doubled home Alivia Clemmons. The game remained even until the sixth, when RHS broke it open.

Autumn Logan led Russellville with two hits, while AJ Taylor, Jenna Whitfield and Karlie Moore all had one hit each. Alivia Clemmons scored two runs for RHS, while Katie Skidmore, Lauren Rogers and Madison Murray all scored one run apiece.

Mars Hill 4, Russellville 2

The RHS Spring Frenzy got underway Friday, and the home team dropped the first of three games of the evening.

The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead before Russellville answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to tie the score. Mars Hill plated two more runs in the second and held on to take the four-inning contest.

Russellville managed one hit, by Alivia Clemmons. Jenna Whitfield and Karlie Moore also reached base on walks. Clemmons and Whitfield scored the RHS runs, and the Lady Golden Tigers had six stolen bases – Murray and Whitfield swiped two each, while Clemmons and Moore had one steal apiece.

Chalea Clemmons started the game and pitched 1.2 innings. She gave up three hits and four runs, with three of them earned.

Clemmons had one strikeout and four walks.

Megan Warhurst came on in relief and allowed two hits and no runs over 2.1 innings of work. She struck out two and walked a batter.

Russellville 7, Mars Hill 3

The Lady Golden Tigers took game two over Mars Hill after building a 7-0 lead after two innings of the three-inning game.

Logan and Moore hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning to get RHS off to a hot start. Whitfield went 2-for-2, while Alivia Clemmons, Taylor and Murray also added hits. Logan led the squad with three RBIs, while Moore, Whitfield and Makala O’Neal all had one each.

Warhurst got the win by pitching 2.2 innings. She allowed only one hit and no runs while striking out four and walking two. Krista Sikes got her first playing time of the season after returning from a preseason injury, and she allowed three runs on two hits.

Russellville (4-4) was led by Whitfield, who went 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Alivia Clemmons, Taylor, Murray and Warhurst also had hits.

Chalea Clemmons started in the circle and pitched 2.1 innings. She allowed three hits and three runs before Warhurst came on in relief and got two outs on seven pitches.

Baseball: Austin 12, Russellville 2

The Bears came to RHS on a cold afternoon for a game March 5 and needed only five innings to get the win.

AHS jumped out to a 7-0 first inning lead and went on to outhit Russellville, 14-5.

Russellville’s Hunter Briles hit his first home run of the season with a two-run shot in the fourth inning.
