Belgreen falls to Falkville

Teams have bad shooting nights throughout the season. For the Belgreen girls basketball team, however, that night came at exactly the wrong time – in the first round of the Northwest Regionals.

The Bulldogs missed 40 shots from the field, including 22 missed three-point attempts, as they fell to Falkville 51-45, ending their season.

Belgreen had a good start, jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the first quarter. Falkville took the lead with just over two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, a lead it would not relinquish. Falkville led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 29-20 by halftime.

Belgreen’s shooting woes began in the first half, as the Lady Bulldogs shot just 25 percent from the field. The Bulldogs were four-for-15 from the three-point line in the first half. Gracie Dempsey and Autumn Bragwell hit two three-pointers each in the first half.

Falkville continued its surge into the third quarter, leading by as many as 14 points. Bragwell hit her only other basket of the game on a three-pointer at the end of the third quarter, and Emma Dempsey hit a short jumper early in the fourth quarter to cut Falkville’s lead to four points.

That was as close as the Bulldogs would get.

Bragwell led Belgreen with 11 points, hitting three three-pointers. Willingham added nine points on three three-pointers. Gracie Dempsey finished the game with eight points, all of which came in the first half. Ansley Tate had seven points, Emma Dempsey five points, Katie Dempsey three points and Gabbie Moore two points.

Belgreen ends the season with a 19-12 record.
