Vina wins Waterloo Christmas Tournament

The Vina Red Devils won three games in one day, two back-to-back, to pick up the championship trophy of the Waterloo Christmas Tournament.

The Red Devils knocked off Whitesburg Christian in the championship game 65-47.

“It was a remarkable effort by our girls to win this tournament, playing all the games in one day,” said Red Devil coach Richie Hester. “We had several girls cheering at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, and they had to leave on the second day of the tournament, so we had to play all of our games in one day. The girls reached back and found a way to win.”

Whitesburg jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead and led 19-9 at the end of the first quarter. It didn’t take the Red Devils long to right the ship, however, as they outscored Whitesburg 20-5 in the second quarter to take a 29-24 halftime lead.

Vina extended that lead to 49-40 at the end of the fourth quarter and outscored Whitesburg 16-7 down the stretch to get the championship win.

Emma Humphres led Vina with 23 points and eight rebounds. She was followed by Sara Scott with 17 points and Rayleigh Guin with 14 points and seven assists. Kaitlyn King added six points, Sarah Johnson had three points, and Abbie Petree grabbed two points.

Vina 57, Waterloo 44

Vina led Waterloo 17-15 at the end of the first and by just three at the half, 27-24. The Red Devils doubled up the Cougars 15-7 in the third quarter to take a 42-31 lead into the final period of play.

Scott followed Guin with 11 points. Humphres added 10 points and 12 rebounds. King had seven points, Johnson five points and Petree one point.

Vina was 22-for-40 from the free throw line.

Vina 65, Cherokee 34

The Vina Red Devils blew past the Cherokee Indians with ease, 65-34, in the opening game of the tournament.

Vina led Cherokee 26-6 at the end of the first quarter and 49-15 at halftime before coasting to the victory.
