Students decorate ornaments for courthouse tree

Franklin County children are once again getting the opportunity to have a hand in the decoration of the Franklin County Courthouse Christmas tree this year.

The ornament theme is Santa Toyland.

Students and teachers have been asked to decorate and deliver their handmade ornaments to the courthouse by Nov. 30.

“The turnout was great last year. I hope that 2018 will be just as successful,” Extension Director Katernia Cole-Coffey said.

The ornaments should be sturdy and non-breakable, approximately 4-6 inches in size and in colors that will contrast well with the tree. They should be delivered to the first floor of the courthouse, where the security guards will accept them.

“Being involved and showing ownership helps lead toward a successful project,” Cole-Coffey said. “The end result is a beautifully-decorated tree with creatively-designed ornaments. Kids can come in the main entrance of the courthouse and see the fruits of their labor.”

The Junior Leaders of Franklin County help decorate the tree with the submitted ornaments.

“Decorating the Christmas tree at the courthouse with students’ ornaments from across the county is one of their favorite service opportunities,” Chamber of Commerce Director Cassie Medley said.

The tree will be ready for viewing Dec. 6 through Jan. 2, 2019, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“I want to thank the Junior Leaders and everyone else who contributes to this project that brings the community together,” Probate Judge Barry Moore said.

Any questions can be directed to the Franklin County Extension Office at 256-332-8880.
