Hi folks,

This past Sunday was Mother’s Day.

A lady whose name was Anna Jarvis worked so hard for this to become a great memorial in honor of all mothers. This became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. It is observed in 40-plus countries throughout the world. Yet the real meaning of the day lost its true meaning along the way, and Mrs. Jarvis was very disappointed that it became so commercialized that it failed to do what she set out for it to be.

Americans will spend more than $23 billion on gifts for their mothers on this day. Newspapers are always filled with Mother’s Day specials. A lot of the money spent on this day will be for jewelry.

So many of our mothers really treasure the homemade items or hand-written cards or poems that a special son or daughter made for them.

I recently ran across a poem Jennifer (our daughter) gave her mom many years ago. This must have been a real treasure for her mother for her to keep and treasure it for so many, many years. Sometimes the simple gifts have the most meaning.

This meant so much to me that I decided to hold onto it. I put it in a scrapbook, along with other things that have so much meaning.

Don’t wait until Mother’s Day to call or visit your mother because we never know when they might leave this world.

We continue to hear about more businesses that are planning to locate in our town. A new steakhouse and an antique store are the last ones I have heard about.

One of the readers of Homefolks U.S.A. asked me, “Where do you get all this news?” My reply was, “I just listen.”

Many times you can learn so much by listening to others. It’s very difficult for folks to listen, and everyone has something they would like to say.

We all have stories to tell and memories we want to share, but it’s difficult to get someone who is willing to listen.

It’s a busy world, and I am afraid that we are missing out on a lot of the important things that might be taking place.
