Vina squeaks out 13-12 win over Hackleburg

By Bart Moss / For the FCT

Abby Hester had four hits, stole six bases and had two runs batted in to lead the Vina Red Devils to a 13-12 come-from-behind win over the Hackleburg Panthers.

Hackleburg jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first inning thanks, in part, to five Red Devil errors.

Vina cut Hackleburg’s lead to 8-7 at the end of the third inning. In the fourth inning, Hester scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 8-8.

Vina took a 9-8 lead in the fifth inning and scored four more in the sixth to extend their lead to 13-8.

Hackleburg hit a grand slam in the sixth to cut Vina’s lead to one, 13-12.

Kaitlyn King had three hits and three RBIs. King was also the winning pitcher, striking out eight Panthers.

Scooter Johnson, Baylee Hutcheson and Brooke Brown each had two hits and two RBIs.

Vina 6, Hackleburg 3

Vina jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by King and Hutcheson. Hackleburg cut Vina’s lead to 2-1 in the top of the second inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, Vina increased the lead to 4-1. Vina extended that lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-RBI-single by King scoring Hester and Brown.
