Belgreen splits area contests

There are blowouts, and then there is Belgreen 92, Hackleburg 17. Yes, that’s right: 92-17, 75-point win for the Bulldogs.

The game was such a mismatch, Belgreen’s two top scorers scored all of their points in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs sank 16 three-pointers in the win.

Belgreen raced out to a 22-6 lead in the first quarter and extended that lead to 41-11 at halftime. Belgreen stretched the lead even further in the third quarter to 62-18 and held the Panthers scoreless in the fourth quarter, 30-0.

Gracie Dempsey hit four three-pointers and scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Bulldogs in scoring. Gabbie Moore made three three-pointers, scoring 13 points, also all in the fourth quarter.

Autumn Bragwell scored 13 points on three three-pointers. Emma Willingham scored nine points, making three three-pointers. Jasmine Martin added eight points, Katie Dempsey eight points and Camie Terrell five points.  Megan Smith scored seven points and had 11 rebounds.

Belgreen improved to 15-9 overall and 5-3 in 1A, Area 13 play.

Phillips 67, Belgreen 46

The Phillips Bears used a strong second half to pull away from the Belgreen Bulldogs in area action last week, 67-46.

Phillips led Belgreen by five, 17-12, at the end of the first quarter. Belgreen closed the gap a bit in the second quarter, outscoring Phillips 15-14 to cut the Bears’ lead to 31-27 at halftime.

Phillips began to pull away in the third quarter, outscoring Belgreen 15-5 to take a 46-32 lead into the final quarter. The Bears put the game away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Phillips 21-14 on the way to the win.

Katie Dempsey led Belgreen with 14 points. Ansley Tate followed with seven points, Bragwell six points, Emma Dempsey five points, Willingham three points, Gracie Dempsey three points and Bailey Oliver three points.
