New 4-H agent brings experience

Many people joined the Franklin County Extension Office in welcoming their new 4-H agent Janet Lovelady Dec. 5 at their Holiday Open House.

Lovelady’s official first day in the office was Nov. 1, but this isn’t her first foray into 4-H. She said she worked with the 4-H program in Lauderdale County for almost 15 years.

“I’m bringing that experience with me, which I think will really serve this community well,” she said.

This is Franklin County’s first experience having its own 4-H agent dedicated solely to this community. Lovelady said the job opened up because the county reached Centennial Youth Initiative status in September, which means that the 4-H program is growing and excelling.

Lovelady said the program’s growth and opportunity for more growth was one of the reasons she applied for the job in the first place.

“I had observed that Franklin’s 4-H was on the verge of growing, and that was a challenge for me but also a great opportunity,” Lovelady said.

Because of her many years in 4-H, Lovelady has worked with Franklin’s 4-H programs on a regional level before, and she said she recognizes some of the children and parents from those past events.

“It helps, I think, that the parents recognize me. They feel more comfortable talking to me and giving me input and ideas,” she said.

While her first priority is to continue the strong programs Franklin has, Lovelady said she welcomes new ideas from the community because she wants to expand and add new opportunities for participants.

“I hope to expand the lifestyle programs and build up the leadership programs. Our goal is to help youth develop life skills in all areas,” she said.

Anyone who would like to offer input or ideas can contact Lovelady at lovelj1@aces.edu or by phone at 256-332-8880.
