Vina basketball tallies wins, losses

Varsity Girls
The Vina Lady Red Devils opened their game against the Hackleburg Lady Panthers with 28 points in the first quarter to take a 28-7 lead. They held that lead through three more quarters on the court to take a 66-27 win over the Panthers and improve to 7-1 on the season.
Sarah Johnson was top scorer for the Red Devil girls with 15 points. Abby Hester also scored in double digits with 10. Kaley Vandiver (9), Kaitlyn King (8), Sara Scott (8), Rayleigh Guin (8), Abbie Petree (6) and Emma Humphres (4) all scored for Vina.
The Lady Red Devils improved to 8-1 with a subsequent 87-52 win over Brilliant. King (23), Guin (20), Hester (17), Humphres (13), Johnson (6), Scott (5), Petree (2) and Vandiver (1) all scored in the win.
The story changed against Phillips.
Vina trailed the powerful Phillips Bear by just one point in the first quarter but was unable to keep up the pace with their area foe, falling 84-49.
Phillips led Vina 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Bears outscored the Red Devils 20-13 in the second quarter to take a 32-24 halftime lead. Phillips outpaced Vina in the third quarter 23-18 to extend their lead to 55-42. The Bears took over the game in the fourth quarter, as three Red Devil players fouled out, outscoring Vina 29-7 to get the win.
Hester led Vina with 21 points. She was followed by Vandiver with eight points and Guin with six points. King (4), Humphres (4), Johnson (2), Scott (2) and Petree (2) all scored for Vina.
Varsity Boys
Vina’s Blake Hardin scored 20 points in a 62-32 win over the Brilliant Tigers. Vina scored 14 points in the first quarter, 23 points in the second quarter, 17 points in the third quarter and eight points in the fourth quarter to seize the victory.
Hardin was followed by Tanner McAlister with 12 points. Timothy Newell added eight points, and Jackson Landers finished with 14 points.
