SPAN observes Red Ribbon Week

The drug and alcohol epidemic in the United States reaches all communities, which is why the SPAN program of Franklin County recognizes National Red Ribbon Week every October.

This year Mayor David Grissom has gotten involved and signed a proclamation declaring the recognition of National Red Ribbon Week Oct. 23-31.

“I’m happy to do this and show support for this cause,” Grissom said.

National Red Ribbon Week’s purpose is to promote a drug-free lifestyle and combat the epidemic of alcohol and other drugs, according to the proclamation. This week was founded by National Family Partnership, a nonprofit organization that focuses on drug prevention education and advocacy.

“We are trying to educate our youth and encourage drug prevention activities,” Remona Roberson, SPAN program coordinator, said.

As part of recognizing this week, red ribbons will be placed around the downtown Russellville area, counselor Pam Armstrong said. The students will also be tie dyeing T-shirts, sporting stickers, baking theme-related food like red velvet cakes, listening to speakers and learning about drug education, Roberson said.

“We are trying to impact their life, show them the importance of drug-free living and teach them life skills,” Roberson explained.

When Grissom signed the proclamation Oct. 4, it was also the 18th anniversary of the SPAN program of Franklin County. Counselors Armstrong and Jamie Harris have been with the program since the beginning.

“Jamie is such a great role model, and he’s so great with the kids,” Roberson said.

Providing that great role model for children is what the program is all about.

“It’s all about choices, and we need to help them make the right ones,” Grissom said.
