Support our kids by Kruzin’

There’s more than one thing to love about the upcoming Watermelon Festival. We don’t know about you, but we love everything from intangibles like the excitement and the atmosphere to the more obvious draws like the live entertainment and, of course, the free slices of juicy watermelon.

But if it’s possible, there might be something we love even more than all the above – and that’s the opportunities that invariable arise to support our friends and neighbors.

Whether it’s someone trying to grow their business through a little promotion or a young performer taking the stage for the first time at the Roxy, there are plenty of people who can use our support and validation at this county festival. Stretching out a hand to others is what community is all about, and the Watermelon Festival always affords that chance.

With that in mind, we would like to encourage you to be part of one special effort that always coincides with the festival: the Kruzin’ for Kids bike ride.

The S.P.A.N. program at First United Methodist Church in downtown Russellville relies on this fundraiser each year to fund many of the services they have for local children – programs that set these kids on the right path toward the best possible future by providing academic, social, behavioral and skills training to the most high-risk youth ages 12-18.

Kruzin’ for Kids Motorcycle Ride will be held Aug. 19 at 9 a.m. The 70-mile ride begins at First United Methodist Church, at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Madison Street. Registration, which includes a meal, is $25 for a single rider and $30 for double. Included the morning’s festivities will be door prizes and a 50/50 drawing.

Corporate sponsorships also help to fund the ride, and we’re told S.P.A.N. usually hopes to raise $5K to support the program’s needs.

This community has always been passionate about our youth and giving them the resources to shape not only their own futures but the future for all of us. We hope you will see Kruzin’ for Kids as just one more way to help the next generation and consider supporting this annual effort.
