Sports News in Brief

Don’t forget these upcoming community sports activities:

  • Russellville Parks and Recreation will hold the annual Parks and Rec basketball camp July 13-14 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Russellville Rec Center. Daily instruction will be led by Sports Hall of Famer Rayfield Ragland. The youth camp is open to both boys and girls 6-16. Cost is $35 per camper. Campers should bring basketball shoes and snack money if they want to make a purchase from the vending machines. Breakfast and lunch will be served to campers each day. Only 40 spots are available, but if another 40 children sign up, the department will host a second camp. For more information call the Rec Center at 256-332-8770.
  • Russellville Parks and Recreation fall sports registration is now open. Children ages 3-12 are invited to sign up for one or more of the numerous sports the department offers each fall. Biddy Body Soccer is designed for children 3-5, providing an introduction to team sports for the very youngest of future athletic stars. For children 6-12, Parks and Recreation will offer soccer, baseball, volleyball, softball and flag football. Registration is $30 per child, with discounts for additional siblings in the same family. Sign-up sheets are located at the Rec Center, 201 Ash Ave., in Russellville.
  • The Red Bay baseball program will be holding hold the 3rd Annual Red Bay High School Alumni Baseball Game July 15. Cost is $25 per player to participate. For more information call 205-495-1170. All proceeds go to the Red Bay Baseball Diamond Club.
  • July 21-22 will be Red Bay’s first ever Men’s Wood Bat Tournament. Players and teams can go back in time and play the game “the way it was meant to be played” – with a strong dose of defense and legitimate home runs with wood bats instead of aluminum bats. This tournament will be held at the Red Bay baseball field. Teams can be formed from any town or city, made up of men ages 18 and up. Rosters must be submitted before the first game and cannot be altered once the tournament starts. Alabama High School Athletic Association officials will be used, and all baseballs will be provided; however, no wood bat will be supplied to any team. The use of school catcher’s equipment can be requested. Standard baseball rules will apply. The cost for the tournament is $25 per player or $225 per playing team. For more information call 205-495-1170. All proceeds go to the Red Bay Baseball Diamond Club.
  • Red Bay has begun youth soccer sign-ups. For more information call 256-356-4473.
  • Russellville soccer coach Trey Stanford will participate as a coach for the North in the North-South All-Star soccer game July 18 as part of the 21st annual AHSAA Summer Conference and AHSADCA All-Star Games competition in Montgomery July 17-21.  The AHSAA Summer Conference is a week-long event that includes sports-specific clinics and special sessions for coaches, principals, athletic directors, cheerleading coaches and officials. Also, an All-Sports Equipment Expo and other related activities are scheduled throughout the week.
