NW-SCC plans Unity Concert
NW-SCC is inviting the community to two special events in honor of Black History Month, and one will take place on the Phil Campbell campus: a Unity Concert hosted by the NW-SCC Cultural Affairs Committee.
The concert will be held Feb. 23 at noon in the student center and will feature music by the NW-SCC Chorale and NW-SCC Jazz Ensemble. Cultural Affairs Chairperson Casey Eggleston said everyone is encouraged to attend this free concert.
The Chorale, Eggleston said, will sing a selection of spirituals, while the jazz ensemble will entertain with a variety of tunes. Additionally, special singers Ruby Tiggs, Elizabeth Harris and PJ Winston will perform spiritual and gospel numbers, as well.
“It will be inspirational and uplifting,” Eggleston said. “The director of the Chorale, each year, gives a history of the music – when the spirituals were written and why.”
Eggleston said the Cultural Affairs Committee has hosted and speaker or concert for a unity celebration during Black History Month for several years. He said the open is that the concert will bring people together to reflect on and celebrate black history with the Choral and Jazz Ensemble. “They always do such a wonderful job. It’s a very exciting concert every year,” Eggleston added.
The concert, which will be co-coordinated by the SGA and school ambassadors, is free and open to the public and will include soul food tasting to complete the event.
