Pre-K opens sign-ups

First Class, Alabama’s Voluntary Pre-K Program, is now accepting applications for the 2016-17 school year.

Enrollment is open to all children four years of age who are residents of the state of Alabama; acceptance to the program is through a random selection process.

The registered applicant must meet residency requirements and present the necessary documents set forth by the program at the time of registration. The registered child must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2016. According to the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education, First Class provides “effective, high quality early childhood experiences that prepare Alabama’s children for school success and lifelong learning.” The program aims to foster enthusiasm for learning, ability to function in a social setting, age-appropriate communication and problem solving skills, age-appropriate physical and emotional skills and optimal health.

Registration will be held in the Pre-K Classroom at each school on the following dates from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

–       Vina: March 4

–       Phil Campbell: March 11

–       East Franklin: March 18

–       Tharptown: March 18

–       Belgreen: April 1

–       Red Bay: April 29

Required documents for registration include: completed family information form; most recent utility bill (proof of residency); birth certificate; income verification for 2015; and Medicaid or insurance card.

A random selection drawing will be held. Families do not have to be present in order to receive a placement.

Anyone who cannot attend on the registration dates may go to www.franklin.k12.al.us and download the Pre-K form to send to the school for their child to be placed in the drawing.

Children who are eligible for kindergarten are ineligible to register.
