Bobby L. “Bob” Whitehead, 70, Lexington, S.C., joined his Heavenly Father after a courageous battle with Glioblastoma brain cancer, on Tuesday, Feb.18, 2014.

Bobby was a distinguished athlete playing basketball and baseball at Brookland-Cayce High School where he received numerous honors.

He was inducted into the B-C Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990. He played in the North-South All Star Basketball game in 1961 and later had the honor of coaching the North-South All-Star Basketball game in 1975.

After graduating from B-C in 1961, he graduated from Anderson College in Anderson, S.C. in 1963 and Shorter College in Rome, Ga. in 1965 with a full basketball scholarship.

He received his master’s degree from SC State in 1973. He was a coach and teacher at Lexington High School from 1965-1969.

He was a coach and principal at Allendale-Fairfax High School and Barnwell High School from 1969-1975. He served 24 years at Gilbert High School as principal from 1975 until his retirement in 1999.

During his tenure at Gilbert, Bob was selected as SC High School Principal of the year in 1994 representing the State of SC. He was inducted into the GHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

During his 34 years in education he was a positive role model and mentor to many students and faculty.

He was born Aug. 5, 1943 to the late John Franklin Whitehead and Ila Mae McCluskey.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Diane Godwin “Dee Dee” Whitehead; daughters, Cherie Corley and husband, Harry, and Candi Burgess and husband, Mike. Also surviving are his brother, Don Whitehead and wife, Brenda; grandchildren, Jacob Corley, Joshua Corley, Allie Harrell, Trace Harrell; step-grandsons Joshua and Joseph Burgess; numerous nephews and nieces. ‘

He loved them all so very much. He was such a great husband, brother, father and PePaw to all and will be missed ever so much.

He was predeceased by step-mother, Nell Korda; brother, Jerry Whitehead; and grandson, Jeremy Corley.

Visitation was Friday evening at Lexington Baptist Church, Lexington, S.C.

Services for Bobby Whitehead were Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at Lexington Baptist church with Dr. Mike Turner, Rev. Jerry Freeman and Rev. Dan Williams officiating. Burial followed at Woodridge Memorial Park on Corley Mill Road.

Pallbearers were Kirk Whitehead, Ben Whitehead, Mark Whitehead, Jordan Whitehead, Jacob Corley, Trace Harrell, Vernon DeFee and Leonard Hoogenboom. Honorary Pallbearers were Edwin Harmon’s Sunday School Class, Joshua Burgess, Joseph Burgess and Chris Ruff.

A special thank you goes to South Carolina Oncology, Dr. Ann Hutchinson and Tammy Cooper; Duke Brain Center, Dr. Katherine Peters, CNA Neicey Somerville and sitters, Misty Williams and Kimberly Bell; Tri-County Home Health and Hospice; Still Hopes Rehab Center and all the fantastic nurses and CNA’s.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Lexington Baptist Church Music Ministry.
