New Year’s resolutions often fall short of mark

My New Year’s resolution — like several previous years — is to not make any more New Year’s resolutions.

I decided awhile back to stop lying to myself about what I was going to do over the course of the new year, because whatever I said inevitably did not come true.

That does not mean that I don’t plan to try and do anything, I’m just not going to hold myself accountable when something doesn’t get accomplished.

My first goal is to finish unpacking in my apartment. I still have a few boxes from my birthday and Christmas that are still sitting in the corner of my living room unopened.

I should probably also see about getting a small kitchen table to go with the two kitchen chairs I have to complete my breakfast nook.

My next goal is to actually spend one whole weekend in my apartment — a feat I have yet to accomplish since moving to Russellville in mid-November.

My biggest goal is to do a good job where I work. Where do I work? Check the top-left corner if you don’t know.

I met two men at a playoff football game in Berry who had one major goal: to see every high school with a football team in the state play at least once. One guy was about 20 short, while the other lacked only four, including the three schools that are starting programs in 2012.

I don’t have such a goal, but one that is very similar: I want to watch at least one college football game in every SEC stadium.

The addition of Missouri and Texas sure put a kink in that goal, as the distance to fulfill this goal became much greater.

I have witnessed games in only two of the stadiums to date. I have seen several games in Bryant-Denny, even though I’m an Auburn fan. This is mostly due to my living less than two hours from Tuscaloosa and three or so from Auburn.

I have seen two games in Jordan-Hare, one of which was unfortunately a loss to South Florida in overtime. That game ended on Sunday, by the way.

In the past my resolutions have dealt with weight loss or finding a job. I accomplished both of those things, but the weight thing became a problem again after I landed in college.

If you are looking for a New Year’s resolution, my suggestion would be not to make one unless you truly mean it.

Otherwise you’ll end up lying to yourself like I’ve done so many times before.
