Winston couple charged with sex crimes

A husband and wife from Winston County are in custody after authorities discovered the man had been having sex with a minor and his wife knew about the abuse and did nothing to stop it.

Dan Busby, Jr., 58, 173 Kidds Rd., Lot 19, Haleyville, was charged with second-degree rape, second-degree sodomy and electronic solicitation of a minor.

Kristy Anne Busby, 34, with the same address, was charged with second-degree rape, second-degree sodomy and another sexually related offense.

According to Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver, officers began investigating allegations of an inappropriate relationship between an underage female victim and Dan Busby after the victim told a friend about the abuse and the friend contacted authorities last week.

Oliver said the alleged sexual abuse that took place in Franklin County happened while the couple lived in the East Franklin community for a short period of time, but other abuse is alleged to have taken place in neighboring counties.

While Dan Busby is accused of committing the actual sexual abuse, Kristy Busby is being charged as a co-conspirator for knowing about the abuse and refusing to report it.

Dan and Kristy Busby are being held in the Franklin County Jail on bonds of $100,000 each.
