Russellville’s choice to keep buses good for schools
The decision by the Russellville City School System to take over the cost of bussing students rather than allowing the service to disband is a wise move, despite the added cost.
While proration has made educating the city’s children more difficult, not providing them with adequate transportation would make it nearly impossible.
Some students might transfer to county schools, which would put pressure on those institutions by adding and influx of students to classes that are already operating at full capacity. The loss of students to Russellville would also cost the school system several teaching jobs, which would harm the students who remain.
Yes, it is an added cost to an already tight budget, but comparing the short-term cost to the long-term ramifications shows this is a good move by the school board.
