Area basketball tournament brackets announced

The high school basketball season is coming to a close and local teams have figured out what their path to the state playoffs will be as brackets for area tournaments were finalized this week.

The top seed in three of the six area tournaments involving local teams were decided by a coin toss.

In the Class 1A, Area 13 boys tournament Belgreen and Tharptown finished the season tied with a 7-1 record in area play. Belgreen won the coin toss, so the Bulldogs will host the area tournament.

In Class 5A, Area 16, the Russellville varsity boys and Russellville varsity girls finished area play with 4-1 records, which tied both squads with Athens. The Russellville boys won their coin toss and will host their area tournament, but the Russellville girls lost their coin toss and will travel to Athens for the area tournament.

The Belgreen girls, Red Bay girls and Sulligent boys all won their area outright and will host their area tournaments.

Pairings for the area tournament:

Class 1A, Area 13 girls at Belgreen: Feb. 8: Vina vs. Phillips, 5:30 p.m.; Feb. 10: Belgreen vs. Vina-Phillips winner, 5:30 p.m.; Tharptown vs. Hackleburg, 7 p.m.; Feb. 14: Finals, 5:30 p.m.

Class 1A, Area 13 boys at Belgreen: Feb. 8: Phillips vs. Vina, 7 p.m.; Feb. 11: Belgreen vs. Phillips-Vina winner, 5:30 p.m.; Tharptown vs. Hackleburg, 7 p.m.; Feb. 14: Finals, 7 p.m.

Class 2A, Area 12 girls at Red Bay: Feb. 10: Red Bay vs. Phil Campbell, 6 p.m.; Sulligent vs. Lamar County, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 12: Finals, 7 p.m.

Class 2A, Area 12 boys at Sulligent: Feb. 11: Phil Campbell vs. Red Bay, 6 p.m.; Sulligent vs. Lamar County, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 14: Finals, 7 p.m.

Class 5A, Area 16 girls at Athens: Feb. 10: Russellville vs. Lawrence County, 6 p.m.; Athens vs. Muscle Shoals, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 12: Finals, 7 p.m.

Class 5A, Area 16 boys at Russellville: Feb. 11: Athens vs. Muscle Shoals, 6 p.m.; Russellville vs. Lawrence County, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 14: Finals, 7 p.m.
