Belgreen sweeps Hackleburg to move to 6-0 in area
BELGREEN — Both the Belgreen varsity boys and varsity girls teams moved one step closer to winning the Class 1A, Area 13 regular season title Monday with wins against Hackleburg.
Both teams improved to 6-0 in area play and both can clinch the right to host the area tournament with if they win Jan. 7 when they host Tharptown. Tharptown is the only other school in Area 13 with a chance to pass Belgreen for the area title.
Belgreen 61, Hackleburg 37
The Lady Bulldogs struggled in the first quarter before making changes to the defensive scheme. Belgreen outscored Hackleburg 11-2 in the second quarter and 20-10 in the third quarter to pull away for a 61-37 victory.
Katelin Barber scored a game-high 31 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs while Kristi O’Dell added 10 points. Also scoring for Belgreen were Lydia DeVaney (8), Erica Smith (8), Bridget Thompson (2) and Brittany Simmons (2).
Ashley Davis scored 14 points to lead Hackleburg while Kristen Camp added eight points. Also scoring for the Lady Panthers were Katlyn Adams (6), Kaysie Pounders (4), Alley Elrod (3) and Dovie Ergle (2).
Belgreen 50, Hackleburg 34
Hackleburg held a 13-10 lead early in the second quarter, but back-to-back-to-back-back 3-pointers by Belgreen gave the Bulldogs a comfortable cushion they would not surrender.
Channey Simmons and Josh DeVaney finished the game with three 3-pointers each and were two of three Belgreen players to finish with double-digit scoring totals.
Simmons scored a game-high 14 points while DeVaney scored 13 points and Jake Tittle added 12 points.
Also scoring for the Bulldogs were Samuel Melecio (5), Will Hester (3) and Cody Glasgow (3).
Ryan Bullock led Hackleburg with 13 points.
Also scoring for the Panthers were Derrick Gunnin (6), Drew Ergle (5), Curtis Randolph (2), Clint Fredrick (2), Adam Sutherland (2) and Justin Galloway (2).
