Red Devils roll to first victory
WATERLOO — It took Vina seven games to earn its first win of the season, but the Red Devils picked up the victory in impressive fashion by dominating Waterloo 61-0.
It is the first time Vina has shutout an opponent since 2001.
Channing Haithcock began the scoring for the Red Devils (1-6, 1-4) by recovering a fumble for a touchdown in the first quarter.
Ethan Pharr recovered another fumble in the second quarter and returned it 30 yards for another touchdown.
Nick Schmittou hit David McDonald with a 40-yard touchdown strike, later hit Adam Pharr with a 36-yard scoring pass and rounded out the second quarter scoring with a 6-yard pass to Ethan Hammock to give the Red Devils a 35-0 lead at halftime.
Schmittou added a 12-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Clay Pierce intercepted a Waterloo pass and returned it 40 yards to extend the lead to 49-0. Ethan Pharr added a 10-yard touchdown run moments later, but the point after attempt failed.
“The offensive line opened up good holes to run through,” Ethan Pharr said.
Joseph Barksdale recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter and returned it 45 yards for the Red Devils fourth defensive touchdown of the night.
“The defense stepped up,” Barksdale said.
With the loss Waterloo falls to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in region play.
Vina will return home next week to host Tharptown.
