William Underwood

Williard Devaler Underwood, 91, longtime Oak Ridge resident, peacefully passed away April 21, 2010 at her home.

She was born in Atwood  to Grover Williams and Joella Renfroe Williams both deceased. Mrs. Underwood was a 1947 charter member of Central Baptist Church, where she was active over the years in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Training Union, and WMV. She enjoyed singing in the Jubilant Jubilee Choir and traveling with the Central Baptist “Go-Getters”. She loved reading and studying the Bible and attributed her longevity to her faith in God, following faithfully in Christ’s teachings, tithing, and hard work. She was a busy, happy, homemaker and a devoted mother. Her interest and hobbies included quilting, crocheting, gardening, and feeding the birds.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Elzy N. Underwood of 61 years, 4 brothers and 3 sisters. She is survived by one sister Geraldine Wilson of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, daughters Brenda and husband Chad Duckworth of Lenoir City, and Linda Underwood of Oak Ridge, sons Roland and wife Ruth Underwood of Hilliard, Florida, and Granvel and wife Elsie Underwood of Lawrenceville, Georgia. She was blessed to have eleven grandchildren, granddaughters Veronica Dupree of Gainesville, Georgia, now deceased, Teresa Whitman, Janet Purvis, Cynthia Wilson, Lourie Mowery, Holly Montano, and Greta Morgan, grandsons Granvel Underwood, Jr., Chad Lee Duckworth, Jr., Kenneth Duckworth, and Christopher Duckworth. She had 20 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday April 24, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00pm at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the funeral service starting at 7:00pm  in the funeral home chapel wit Rev. Glenn Ellis officiating. Graveside service will be held Sunday April 25. 2010 2:00pm at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the Jubilant Jubilee Choir of Central Baptist Church 128 Providence Rd. Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
