Ryan Romans became the fifth senior on Russellville’s two-time state runner-up football team to sign a national letter of intent to play collegiate football.
Romans signed Thursday with the University of North Alabama.
“Coach (Terry) Bowden is a good coach, UNA has a reputation of winning and it is close to home so my family can watch me play,” Romans said.
Romans, who played wide receiver, defensive back and returned kicks for the Golden Tigers, will be used mostly on the defensive side of the ball with the Lions. He joins linebacker Jesse Green as the second Russellville player to sign with UNA this year.
Russellville coach Doug Goodwin said he was happy to see so many of his players sign and that Romans’ skills will be missed.
“I hate to see them go, but I look forward to keeping up with them,” Goodwin said. “Ryan is a great all-around athlete and has great motor skills.”
Goodwin said Roman’s versatility was a big help for the Golden Tigers in the run to the state championship game the previous two seasons.
During those two years Romans recorded 162 total tackles, 118 of which were solo, intercepted five passes and recovered six fumbles. On offense he caught 60 passes for 908 yards and eight touchdowns he also rushed 43 times for 260 yards and two touchdowns.
Romans said he is glad UNA plans to use him for defense.
“You get hit hard at the college level and I like to hit people,” Romans said.
