QBs look good in UNA spring game

By Staff
FLORENCE – The race to replace Harrison Beck as quarterback at the University of North Alabama took an interesting turn Saturday during the Spring Game.
Tate Humphrey, a transfer from West Hill College in California, got the nod as quarterback for the White team, which consisted of the first-string offense.
Simon Propst, a red shirt freshman, quarterbacked the Purple team.
"I told all the quarterbacks there would not be a No.1, No.2, No.3 until the end of spring," said UNA coach Terry Bowden.
Humphrey made a good argument for the starting job early by connecting with Tim Hawthorne, a transfer from Auburn, on a 41-yard touchdown pass on the White team's second drive of the game.
Humphrey then drove the White team for another score to go up 14-0 before the end of the first quarter.
Propst took a little longer to get going, but once he did, he took off.
Propst scored on 7-yard run with 1:42 to play in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 14-7 by halftime.
On Purple's third drive of the second half Propst hit Jason Smith with a 70-yard touchdown strike to tie the game.
In the closing minutes Probst drove the Purple squad to a game winning field goal by Michael Schuster.
Humphrey finished the day completing 8-of-17 passes for 118 yards, one touchdown and an interception.
Propst completed 15-of-31 passes for 211 yards, one touchdown and an interception.
"I saw a lot of good things. We really had a good day today," Bowden said. "(Humphrey) played better in scrimmage than in practice. I saw him make some plays. Propst did some good things too."
