Alabama QB prepared for former coach

By Staff
Alabama could be without two of its best offensive players today as the Crimson Tide host North Texas.
Running back Roy Upchurch and wide receiver Julio Jones are questionable after suffering injuries during last week's 40-14 victory against Florida International.
Even if they do not play, the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide should have little trouble disposing of the Mean Green.
While the North Texas (1-1) defense is currently 38th in the nation in total defense, the competition it has faced is far below the talent level of Alabama. North Texas beat Ball State 20-10 and lost to Ohio 31-30 in double overtime.
The biggest story of this game is the showdown between Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy and Mean Green coach Todd Dodge. Dodge was McElroy's high school coach at Southlake Carroll in Texas.
In 2005 the two led the team to the Texas 5A state title and a mythical national championship. Dodge was named the National Coach of the Year and McElroy earned Texas 5A Player of the Year honors.
Things have changed for both since McElroy's graduation. McElroy was part of the Alabama squad that captured the Southeastern Conference West Division title last year and came close to competing for a national championship.
Dodge took the job at North Texas and has compiled a 4-22 record with the Mean Green.
Alabama has played North Texas two previous times. The Crimson Tide earned a 38-19 win in 1995 and a 33-7 victory in 2002.
