Crosswalk to connect RHS, RMS

Congressman Robert Aderholt, R-Haleyville, announced Tuesday that he secured $300,000 in federal funding for the city of Russellville for a pedestrian safety project.
The funding is included in the Fiscal Year 2010 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill that passed the House of Representatives on July 23. A final version of the House and Senate bill is expected in the Fall of 2009.
The funding will be used for a pedestrian bridge system including ramps and a bridge across Summit Street connecting Russellville Middle and Russellville High Schools.
"We would like to thank Rep. Aderholt and his staff for all the hard work that went into securing these funds for the safety of our students," said City Councilman Jeff Masterson.
The crosswalk will allow for the safe passage of school children for these schools.
"A safe transportation system is vital to the continued growth and well-being of Russellville," Aderholt said. "I am glad that these funds will help improve safety for students walking to school each day in a high-traffic area."
Masterson said the bridge will probably not be constructed until 2010, but officials have already met with one of Aderholt's assistants concerning the earmarks and the possibilities of additional funding.
"I know when this does finally take place it will ease a lot of minds concerning that crossing and add to several great things we've got going on in Russellville," Masterson said.
